Last year Netflix lead all studios with 24 total nominations for their films. That was before a world wide pandemic forced everyone to watch the latest releases from their living rooms. Now Netflix dominates the Oscars with 35 nominations amongst 15 of their films. Luckily, you can watch all 15 of Netflix’s Oscar nominated movies at no extra cost.
“Mank” leads the way with 10 nominations. The David Fincher film that details the writing of “Citizen Kane” is up for Best Picture. Additionally, Fincher, Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried were all nominated for their work on the film. “Mank,” which payed homage to 1930s cinema by shooting in black and white, was also nominated for Best Cinematography. The film’s remaining Oscar nods include: Original Score, Sound, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
Additionally, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” received six nominations, including Best Picture and Supporting Actor. However, unlike “Mank,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” was originally intended to be released by Paramount Pictures. But, due to the pandemic, the studio sold the distribution rights to the streaming giant.
If you haven’t yet watched “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” make sure to check it out before April 25th. Chadwick Boseman’s electrifying performance has earned him a posthumous nomination for Best Actor. Although the Best Actor race is tight, Boseman currently stands as the frontrunner. The scene stealing performance of Viola Davis has earned her a second nomination for Best Actress and fourth overall Oscar nomination.
