‘Cruella’ Holds First Big Hollywood Premiere Since Coronavirus Began

On Wednesday, Disney rolled out the red carpet for their latest feature “Cruella.” The film centers on the origins of the infamous villain from “101 Dalmatians,” Cruella de Vil.

While there were plenty of safety restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic, this was considered the first major premiere that Hollywood has seen since before the COVID-19 outbreak. The event was a breath of fresh air for the film industry.

Emma Stone will be playing the titular character in this modern retelling of an old Disney tale. Reboots have been commonplace with Disney recently, and “Cruella” seems to be in a similar vein to the “Maleficent” series starring Angelina Jolie. In fact, the two films coincidentally share a May 28th release date, 7 years apart. Emma Thompson and Mark Strong are among those who will be co-starring alongside Stone in the film.

Much of the cast was able to attend the premiere, making it truly feel like a Hollywood affair. Emma Stone was dressed for the occasion in a devilishly sharp black pantsuit, breaking away from her typically colorful style. The cast seemed humbled to have the opportunity to celebrate the film the old fashioned way after the difficult year that has passed.

The film was screened in the El Capitan theater in Los Angeles. The glamorous event only heightens movie lovers’ anticipation towards cinema going back to normal. Disney and other major companies are looking to capitalize on this newfound excitement, and most studios are mutually pushing for fans to get back into theaters. However, it is possible that streaming services like Disney+ and HBO Max, which offer films concurrently with their theater releases, could undermine the moviegoing resurgence.
