Daniel Day-Lewis is a living legend in Hollywood and has one of the most interesting careers in the film business. He’s notoriously selective about the projects to which he commits and is even more famous for his penchant for staying in character throughout the entirety of the shoots.
At this point, it’s not uncommon for the actor to take five years off between roles. He’s also announced his “retirement” from acting on more than one occasion. Most recently, he issued a statement in June of 2017 declaring, “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”
So far, Day-Lewis has stuck to his word (though we’re still within his typical five year layoff gap). Following the production of Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 drama “Phantom Thread,” the world hasn’t seen or heard from the esteemed actor.
If this time around Day-Lewis were to indeed remain retired, how might the world remember his career? Well, if nothing else, the three time Oscar winner would forever be known for picking winning scripts. The following infographic shows that over the course of his four decade-long career, all but two—TWO!—of Day-Lewis’ films are rated “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.
