BAFTA Shifts 2020 Awards Date to Stay Ahead of Oscars
BAFTA’s annual Film Awards have shifted to an earlier date in 2020 to remain ahead of the Academy Awards. Their ceremony will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, just one week before the Oscars, which themselves were moved up recently from Feb. 23, 2020.
Typically there is a two-week gap between the BAFTAs and Oscars (the 2019 Oscars will take place on Feb 24, and the 2019 BAFTAs will take place on Feb 10), but that gap is down to one week for 2020. When the Academy Award date change was announced, a BAFTA spokesman noted that its “intention will be to stay ahead of the Oscars, as we have been since 2001.”
The new 2020 Academy Award date likely puts the ceremony on course to coincide with the Berlin Film Festival, which traditionally takes place over the second and third weeks of February. The Berlin Film Festival has yet to set its 2020 dates.
