New Technology Can Be Used to Track Shared Streaming Accounts
Santa knows if you’ve been naughty or nice. Netflix knows if you’ve been sharing your password.
Software specialist Synamedia announced their new technology that can be used to track down users sharing accounts and passwords for Netflix. According to the company, the technology “combats the rapid rise in account sharing between friends and families, turning it instead into a new revenue-generating opportunity for operators.”
Media research firm Magid has claimed that upwards of 35 percent of millennials share passwords for video streaming services.
While Netflix is widely aware of account sharing and likely already has ways to determine if individual accounts are utilizing such a practice, the company has yet to administer any sort of crackdown. In the future, however, Netflix may nudge such suspected accounts to utilize a premium membership, which can be shared with family and friends.
