Avatar 2 and 3 Have Wrapped, Yet Avatar 4 and 5 May Be In Peril
Years ago, James Cameron shockingly announced that four—FOUR!—Avatar sequels would be developed concurrently; however, the last two installments might not actually see the light of day.
It’s been confirmed that production is now complete on Avatar 2 and 3. At the same time, it’s been revealed that Cameron is waiting to officially receive a green light for Avatar 4 and 5. The main sticking point is the finalization of the merger between Disney and Fox, in which massive amounts of capital resources are in flux.
More specifically, despite all four installments being confirmed by Fox in 2017, the company was said to be waiting on the box office results of Avatar 2 and 3 before permitting Cameron to proceed with 4 and 5. Now, however, Disney will be in charge of making the call. That looks to be in Cameron’s favor since the “Pandora: The World of Avatar” theme park is a major attraction at Disney World.
Cameron has previously stated, “The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. It’s on Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it.” Yet if Avatar 2 and 3 struggle at the box office, the winds of change might blow against Cameron’s favor.
Avatar 2 is set to premiere on December 18, 2020, and Avatar 3 will release a year later on December 17, 2021.
