AMC and Regal Cinemas Exclude Netflix's 'Roma' From Annual Best Picture Showcase
AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas have announced that ‘Roma’ will not be included in their annual Best Picture Showcase, featuring all the Oscar nominated titles in the category. They will only be playing the best picture Oscar nominees that had a traditional theatrical release and respected the 90-day cinema window.
AMC issued the following statement:
“For more than a decade, movie-lovers have enjoyed the AMC Best Picture Showcase to catch up on the nominated films that played at AMC throughout the prior year. This year, Academy members nominated a film that was never licensed to AMC to play in our theatres. As such, it is not included in the AMC Best Picture Showcase.”
Netflix rolled out ‘Roma’ on Nov. 21 at the IFC Center in New York and the Landmark 57 in Hollywood in order to qualify as a theatrical release and be eligible for the Academy Awards. ‘Roma’ later began streaming worldwide via Netflix on Dec. 14.
The decision of whether or not Cinemark will screen ‘Roma’ as part of its Oscars Week is pending.
