The Rumored Model for Shrek, Maurice Tillet, a French Pro Wrestler Better Known as The French Angel
Maurice Tillet was a french professional wrestler who rose to stardom in the early 1940’s.
Growing up his appearance was completely normal and Tillet’s nickname was "The Angel" due to his angelic face. However, when Tillet was 20, he noticed swelling in his extremities. After visiting a doctor, he was diagnosed with acromegaly, which is a condition usually caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland resulting in bone overgrowth and thickening.
Tillet’s physical attributes made him a massive success on the pro wrestling circuit, yet by 1945 his health began to fail. He died at the age of 50 on September 4, 1954, in Chicago.
There’s been ongoing speculation that Maurice's likeness was used to create the character of Shrek, but the rumor has never been confirmed.
