Bruno Ganz, 1941 - 2019

Bruno Ganz, 1941 - 2019

Bruno Ganz, 77, passed away at his home in Zurich on Friday night, his management said.

Ganz is most famous for his powerhouse portrayal as Adolf Hitler in the 2004 movie ‘Downfall.’ We actually featured this film in our ‘Best Movies You’ve Never Seen’ series but since removed the video from YouTube because the subject matter (and YouTube’s flawed algorithm) hurt our channel’s standing.

More personally, this news hit even closer to home since we were blessed with the opportunity to screen 1987’s ‘Wings of Desire’ exactly one month ago today. Bruno Ganz’s performance—and the overall experience of seeing this classic film on the silver screen—were both magnanimous.

At the time of his death, Ganz was the holder of the Iffland-Ring, an accolade to the German-speaking actor judged "most significant and worthy". The ring is passed from person to person, and it is not yet clear who Ganz had intended it to transfer to on the occasion of his death.

In the eyes of Hitler's infamous secretary, Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara, The Reader), optimism crumbles into grim realization and terror as it becomes clear that Germany's defeat is inevitable.
