Brooks Was Here
Golfers and movie aficionados, unite!
For anyone who’s seen ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and is also following the progress of the PGA Championship in Bethpage, New York, you’ll understand this reference.
Golfer Brooks Koepka, who has previously won three major championships in the past two years, fired an opening round 63 yesterday, setting a new course record.
"That was one of the best rounds I've played probably as a professional," Koepka said. "This golf course is brutal."
He is the ninth player to open a major with 63, though only two of them went on to win—Jack Nicklaus at Baltusrol in the 1980 U.S. Open and Raymond Floyd at Southern Hills in the 1982 PGA Championship.
Time will tell if Koepka can go wire-to-wire for his fourth major championship victory, but with the record already in hand, no matter the result, the famed Black course will indeed know “Brooks was here.”
