Dark Phoenix May Lose $100 Million at the Box Office
‘Dark Phoenix’ bombed at the box office this weekend and is now likely to lose $100 million or more.
Fox's superhero franchise has had a roller coaster ride of box office receipts since premiering in 2000, and the studio may have saved the worst for last. ‘Dark Phoenix’ is largely panned by critics, criticizing its half-baked plot and tepid character arcs.
While the quality of the X-Men movies have varied from film to film, one surprising constant (until now) has been that they’ve all been considered financially successful. Even the lesser entries, like ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ ended up turning a profit by the time they left theaters. But ‘Dark Phoenix’ proved to fly too close to the sun and now Fox is looking down the barrel of some heavy losses.
According to Deadline, ‘Dark Phoenix’ could lose anywhere between $100 - 120 million when the accounting is finally done. This news comes after it was reported the film earned just $33 million domestically during its opening weekend, by far the lowest debut in the franchise.
