'Matrix 4' Unexpectedly Green Lit with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss Returning
Well slap us sideways, this was unexpected: according to an official report by Variety, ‘Matrix 4’ is being written and directed by Lana Wachowski with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.
Where is Lilly Wachowski in this equation? Who knows! And aren’t Neo and Trinity dead? Yup! But this is Hollywood, so who cares!
Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement on Tuesday.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Picture Group. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”
The film is reportedly expected to begin production in the first half of 2020. Plot details are presently unknown, as is how the role of Morpheus will be handled, originally played by Laurence Fishburne.
Our hot take on the matter is that this stinks to high heaven as another studio cash grab. Lana Wachowski is likely pining for a hit following Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending, while Keanu Reeves is as hot as ever, so Warner is probably creepily licking their lips and rubbing their hands together getting aroused to the thought of a billion dollar box office return.
