The O.G. Wonder Woman, Linda Carter, 1976

The O.G. Wonder Woman, Linda Carter, 1976

Gal Gadot is everything you want in a Wonder Woman: strong, beautiful, and empowered. But she’s not the original.

That honorific goes to Lynda Carter, the O.G. Wonder Woman, who had to fight for one of the more iconic female roles in recent history at a time when sexism was as rampant as ever in Hollywood.

Carter began her acting career early, at the age of 5, participating in the Lew King Ranger Show. Later, she studied classical dance and drama, before eventually moving to L.A. in search of the role that would bring her fame.

Carter first auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman in 1974 but lost out to Cathy Lee Crosby. A year later she tried again, but never hoped to score the part. However, she bested 2,000 other women who were participating in the audition and the rest, as they say, is history.
