Movie Detail Monday: Brooks' Last Moments in 'The Shawshank Redemption'

Filmmaking is one of the highest forms of art and the more we can relay that to the general populace the better we’re doing our job. So to kick off a new weekly series called Movie Detail Mondays, we’re starting with an emotionally compelling scene from ‘The Shawshank Redemption,” one of just two films we’ve ever rated a perfect 10 out of 10.

In it, old man Brooks has been paroled after 50 years of incarceration. The outside world is scary and foreign to him. In the words of Red, he’s been “institutionalized.” As a result, Brooks has this to say:

I have trouble sleeping at night. I have bad dreams, like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. Maybe I should get me a gun and rob the Food-Way, so they'd send me home. I could shoot the manager while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense anymore. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. Not for an old crook like me.

Then comes this shot, framed in such a way that it resembles bars on a prison cell … and Brooks smiles. Welcome to Movie Detail Monday.

This segment is a beautiful mini-movie within a movie. It broke our hearts back in 1994, and it still does so every time we watch this near-perfect film.
