Taika Waititi’s 'Jojo Rabbit' Defeats 'Joker,' Winning the People’s Choice Award at TIFF
Looks like we’ve got ourselves a real humdinger of a slobberknocker between two movie heavyweights!
The first round went to Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker,’ which took home the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The second round goes to Taika Waititi’s 'Jojo Rabbit,' which just nabbed the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Which of these two films will emerge as the ultimate winner prime-time awards season? We’re excited to find out!
In addition to beating ‘Joker,’ ‘Jojo Rabbit’ also took down Marielle Heller’s ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ and Fernando Meirelles’ ‘The Two Popes.’ Noah Baumbach’s ‘Marriage Story’ starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver was the first runner-up, while Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite”—which, mind you, won the Palm d’Or at Cannes—was second runner-up.
Of the past 11 winners of the TIFF People’s Choice Award, 10 have gone on to receive Best Picture Oscar nominations. 4 have won, including ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ in 2008, ‘The King’s Speech’ in 2010, ‘12 Years a Slave’ in 2013, and ‘Green Book’ last year.
