A new featurette for James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” has just dropped, and in it, we get a taste of the film’s large, colorful cast composed of the world’s most unlikely heroes. Through little snippets and cuts of the film’s scenes and actor interviews, the new trailer gives us some “one on one” with each star and gives the actors some time to talk about what their character means to them.
“The Suicide Squad” follows the iconic characters from the comic of the same name. It is intended to be a standalone sequel to “Suicide Squad” (2016) and the tenth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Written and directed by James Gunn, the film follows a task force of convicts who are sent to destroy a Nazi-era laboratory, where they encounter the giant alien Starro.
The star-studded cast includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Peter Capaldi. Though reactions to the film have been limited, early reviews have praised the film for its comical, outlandish and “bonkers” portrayal of these characters, saying that James Gunn and DC are a “match made in heaven.”
“‘The Suicide Squad’ is gloriously insane and so, so fun… after watching it, you’ll think you might have dreamed it,” said film reviewer Drew Taylor. Kirsten Acuna, another reviewer, spoke on behalf of the film’s emotional resonance saying, “What Gunn does great is he makes you care about so many obscure characters (just like in ‘Guardians’). The difference is that he’s allowed to pull the rug out from under you and kill whoever he pleases because it’s not a Disney film.”
“The Suicide Squad” will hit US cinemas on August 5, 2021, and will be available to stream on HBO Max the following day.
