Actress Kelly Preston lost her 2-year battle with breast cancer on Sunday. The “Jerry Maguire” actress was 57 years old. Her husband, prolific actor John Travolta, announced the news on Instagram. “She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many (…) Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered,” said John Travolta in his heart-rending social media post.
Preston made her film debut in 1983’s crime thriller “10 to Midnight.” Her first prominent role came two years later in the romantic comedy “Mischief,” where she portrayed popular high schooler Marilyn McCauley. Other notable roles include intelligent teen Tish Ambrosé in sci-fi flick “SpaceCamp” and wedding singer Libby Reynolds in Amanda Bynes comedy “What a Girl Wants.”
Preston met husband John Travolta in 1989 on the set of Dave Thomas’ “The Experts,” in which Preston and Travolta shared an intimate dance scene. Dancing seemed to be one of the couple’s favorite pastimes. “Every time I see you and your husband, John Travolta, you are dancing,” exclaims Kelly Ripa in an interview with Preston. The pair also enjoyed acting together. After “The Experts,” Preston and Travolta starred alongside one another in four films: “Battlefield Earth,” “Old Dogs,” “From Paris with Love,” and “Gotti.”
Kelly Preston and John Travolta eloped to Paris in 1991, only to have second wedding ceremony in Florida after the first was considered invalid. They were married for nearly 29 years and had three children, one of which passed away after suffering a seizer in 2009. Preston’s battle was not highly publicized, and her death came as a surprise to many.
Grievances poured out in response to Travolta’s announcement. Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, and Sarah Paulson were among some of the celebs to express their condolences following the news of Preston’s death. Travolta’s Instagram post can be viewed below, along with tributes from people all around the entertainment world. She will be greatly missed.
