The official trailer for Gia Coppola’s “Mainstream” has been released. The film debuted at the Venice Film Festival and is produced by IFC Films. It stars Andrew Garfield, Maya Hawke, Nat Wolff, and Jason Schwartzman. Oh, and Johnny Knoxville.
“Mainstream” seems to center around Maya Hawke’s character’s rise to Internet fame following a chance encounter with a charismatic stranger in Andrew Garfield. As all films about Internet stardom go, I’m sure “Mainstream” will focus on the dangers of online fame and the destructiveness of adoration from people you cannot physically see or hear. Am I the only one tired of Internet movies?
Regardless, it’s exciting to see Andrew Garfield back on the big screen. His former “Spider-Man” charisma is abundant in the “Mainstream” trailer and it’s intriguing to see the British actor stepping into this type of role. However, parodying a YouTuber seems almost an impossible task, as the manic stars of the Internet are pretty much already parodies of themselves. Just ask Jake Paul, who stars as himself in “Mainstream.” Sigh.
Gia Coppola, the writer/director of “Mainstream” is also intriguing to me. I wonder if audiences, including myself, hold her to an almost impossible standard given her family’s history in the business. I’m pretty confident “Mainstream” isn’t topping “The Godfather” trilogy, but there’s still a certain expectation when you share a last name with arguably the greatest director of all time.
“Mainstream” currently sits with a 36% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.6/10 on IMDB. The film is releasing in theaters on May 7, 2021.
