In a film year that’s been decimated by the ongoing pandemic, Hollywood hits have been few and very far between. Cinematic spectacles such as Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Disney’s “Mulan” have come and gone with–at best–little fanfare. At worst, they’ve been panned for completely missing their mark, disappointing fans and box office prognosticators alike.
“Mank” represents another Hollywood contender potentially vying for best movie of the year. Unlike the previously mentioned tentpole films, however, “Mank” isn’t banking on spectacle alone. “Mank” is a complete package.
David Fincher is celebrated for being among the best directors alive. He’s assembled an all-star cast and crew to bring “Mank” to life. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the same duo who won the Oscar working with Fincher on 2010’s “The Social Network,” are providing the film’s original score. Erik Messerschmidt is serving as the film’s cinematographer. He first worked with Fincher as a gaffer on “Gone Girl” before serving as DP on several episodes of “Mindhunter” Season 2. Did we almost forget to mention that “Mank” stars Gary Oldman as Herman Mankiewicz and Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies? Yeah, add them to the list of why there’s so much hype behind the film.
