“Songbird,” the first of (most likely) many pandemic films, has cast its two leads: “Riverdale” star KJ Apa and “Descendants” alum Sofia Carson. “Songbird” commenced filming last Wednesday in Los Angeles, less than a week after production was temporarily shut down by SAG-AFTRA due to coronavirus concerns. Invisible Narratives, a content studio founded by former Paramount President Adam Goodman and former Disney Executive Vice President Andrew Sugerman, is teaming up with filmmaker Michael Bay to produce the project.
“Songbird” is set two years in the future during a pandemic lockdown. The plot “follows an essential worker (KJ Apa) who has a rare immunity, a delivery man who delivers goods and hope throughout the city. Like the vast majority of the population, his girlfriend (Sofia Carson) is locked within her home, and the couple have no ability to physically be together. To be with the one he loves, he must overcome martial law, murderous vigilantes and a powerful, well connected family, helmed by a matriarch (Demi Moore) who will stop at nothing to protect her family and maintain her way of life,” Deadline reports.
Adam Mason is directing the romantic drama, which he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Simon Boyes. Previously announced cast members include Demi Moore (“Empire”), Bradley Whitford (“Get Out”), Craig Robinson (“The Office”), and Jenna Ortega (“You”).
New Zealander KJ Apa rose to prominence after being cast as Archie Andrews The CW’s “Riverdale.” The hit teen series was recently renewed for a fifth season and is expected to air sometime next year. Apa recently starred as Christian music star Jeremy Camp in the Erwin Brothers’ “I Still Believe.” His other credits include “The Hate U Give” and “The Last Summer.”
Sofia Carson first appeared as a guest on Disney’s “Austin & Ally.” She continued her relationship with Disney, playing Evie in the wildly popular “Descendants” franchise and Lola Perez in the remake of “Adventures in Babysitting.” Carson signed to Hollywood Records in 2016 and has since released a number of singles and EPs. She has 16 million Instagram followers and over 4.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Carson’s most recent project, “Feel the Beat,” is available to stream on Netflix.
