One of the most renowned actors of all time, Robert De Niro, is continuing his foray into comedy. He joins the Lionsgate comedy “About My Father,” starring standup Sebastian Maniscalco in a film based loosely on his life.
De Niro will play Maniscalco’s father Salvo, an old-school Italian immigrant. Sebastian tells Salvo he plans on proposing to his girlfriend, who is all-American, forcing Salvo to insist on crashing a weekend with her parents.
I suppose it’s time for Sebastian’s girlfriend to … meet the parent? I’ll see myself out.
Nathan Kahane, the current president of Liongstate Motion Picture Group, said “The way Sebastian talks about his father, Salvo sounds to us like the type of guy who thinks that Robert De Niro should play him in a movie. So, we thought, why not?”
He goes on to say: “Actually, Robert De Niro is incredibly selective about the projects he chooses, so we are thrilled that he responded so strongly to this hilarious and heartfelt screenplay. He’ll make a fantastic and funny pairing with Sebastian and we can’t wait to start production later this year.”
Robert De Niro has been exploring the world of comedy for some time now. From “Meet the Parents” to “The Intern” to I guess “Dirty Grandpa,” De Niro is no stranger to comedy acting. He previously worked with Maniscalco on Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.”
De Niro will once again work with his favorite director in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which is currently in production. He will star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.
Currently, there is no word on when “About My Father” will be released.
