The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting back to full swing. “The Falcon and Winter Soldier” is currently dominating streaming, “Black Widow” has a concrete release date and now “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings” released it’s first official trailer.
Simu Liu and Awkwafina star in the MCU’s first Asian superhero movie that hits theaters this Labor Day weekend. Liu plays Shang-Chi, an expert martial artist who the Ten Rings raised to be an assassin. However, as Shang-Chi tries to live a normal life in San Francisco, he gets drawn back into the Ten Rings organization where he must face his past.
Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film which shot during the coronavirus pandemic. Filming largely took place throughout Australia where “Thor: Love and Thunder” is currently in production. However, after filming wrapped Down Under the crew returned to California for exterior shots.
Cretton’s previous credits include “Short Term 12” which featured Brie Larson in one of the best breakout performances of last decade. Additionally, Cretton directed 2019’s “Just Mercy” starring Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Larson.
The “Shang-Chi” trailer already has fans looking for easter eggs that connect it to other Marvel films. Actor Zach Cherry, who cameos as a street vendor in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” appears to also cameo in the “Shang-Chi” trailer. At 1:33, Cherry appears to be a bus passenger in a scene that’s reminiscent of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock’s “Speed”.
Surely fans will discover even more easter eggs before “Shang-Chi” hits theaters on September 3.
