If there’s anything as disappointing as shameless corporate cash grabs, it’s movie trailers that show you everything. Lucky us; “Sing 2” has both!
The animated movie trailer seems to pack an entire film’s plot into its runtime. From the failed audition to the lie the cast makes to get in with the big leagues all the way through the big emotional finale, I feel like I know every beat of this movie in three and a half minutes.
The first “Sing” film was an odd tale about a group of animals coming together to…you know, sing. The all-star cast and obnoxious number of needle drops ensured the film’s financial success. In fact, according to Box Office Mojo, the film is the highest-grossing movie never to reach number one. The film was a low-key hit, just trailing behind “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Hidden Figures” the December it was released.
However, the movie hasn’t had the staying power of some of Illumination’s other projects. While I think we can all agree “Minions” mania hasn’t completely died out, “Sing” is rarely a topic of successful animation discussion. I’m not sure the film will be able to hold up during this rough year, even if the box office is on the rise.
But the film may be able to keep itself afloat due to its big names. Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Halsey, Pharrell, and Bono are “Sing 2” stars. Consequently, this animated film will probably do alright. Garth Jennings, the director of the first “Sing” as well as “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” is returning for this movie. Additionally, the trailer does feature some impressive songs from pop stars like Billie Eilish and Shawn Mendes. Who knows; “Sing 2” could end up surprising us all.
“Sing 2” is expected to release December 22 this year.
