I have a few guilty pleasures in life. One of them is watching YouTube videos of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert that were derived from VHS recordings.
Sure, there’s a lot of nostalgia involved, but it’s also just good viewing. I consider Ebert to be the finest film critic to have ever lived. Siskel, though I rarely agree with his opinions, serves as the perfect counterweight for Ebert (or perhaps a better word for it is foil).
Check out this clip for two reasons. One, to learn more about letterboxing if you aren’t fully up to speed with the letterboxing versus pan and scan debate, and two, simply because it’s classic Siskel and Ebert.
PS: The funniest part is Siskel mentioning that letterboxing is preferable as long as you don’t have a small television, say “25 inches or bigger.” LOL!
