Sylvester Stallone has revealed on his Instagram account that the famed fighter is writing a treatment for a “Rocky” prequel series, showing there’s no limit to the number of rounds the Italian Stallion can go.
The “Rocky” franchise encompasses six films, from the 1976 original to 2006’s “Rocky Balboa.” It also launched a spinoff franchise, “Creed,” with the aging Philly boxer serving as a mentor and coach to Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the son of former rival-turned-friend Apollo (Carl Weathers).
Now, according to a post on Monday via Stallone’s Instagram account, the franchise is seemingly going back in time to the ’60s, before Rocky was ever champ.
Sly posted a photo of writing on a notebook page along with a lengthy caption that reads, “This may be the strangest posting yet. I started out this morning by writing a treatment for a Rocky prequel for streaming. Ideally 10 episodes for a few seasons to really get to the heart of the characters in there [sic] younger years.” The first of two handwritten pages is labelled “Treatment for Rocky Prequel Series” followed by a brief concept note and a number of bullet point events of the era.
“Imagine a time machine that will simply transport us back to the origins of Rocky,” Stallone writes, “a cinematic world brimming with characters that have been beloved by people around the world for nearly five decades!” Some of the events of the time in question include the moon landing, the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and the assassination of JFK.
This is just the rough notes prior to even any first drafts, therefore there’s no telling where the story may go or even if it ultimately gets off the ground. However, with so many streaming services competing for content, one can only assume the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Rocky will attract a suitor.
