In late August, movie news journalists rushed to their workstations to breathlessly report the unimaginable: that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” had not only beaten “Avengers: Endgame” for the most trailer views in the first 24 hours, but it had absolutely SMASHED the record.
The hype was well-deserved. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” racked up a total of 355.5 million views over the course of that first day. “Avengers: Endgame,” with all the hubbub and hype, garnered a total of 289 million views, a figure that somehow seems quaint in comparison.
Why the massive views? Somebody will have to write a thesis or scientific article on the phenomenon to say for sure. Those picking low-hanging fruit will attribute it to Sony holding back the trailer for so long, or pent-up demand for Marvel movies (or, in this case, Marvel-ish, since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is shared by Disney and Sony) as a result of the pandemic.
Regardless, there’s no denying the Zeus-like might of The House of Mouse. Together, Disney holds 7.5 of the top 10 properties on the most watched trailers list. Warner Bros. owns the #6 spot with 2017’s “It,” while Universal Pictures owns the #10 spot with 2020’s “F9.”
