“The Personal History of David Copperfield” is rather glaringly a sleeper flick right now, flying under the radar and out of the limelight of both mainstream media and the general public.
The film–in theaters Friday–is directed by Armando Iannucci, who previously brought us the lauded dark dramedies “The Death of Stalin” (2017) and “In the Loop” (2009). It stars Dev Patel as David Copperfield and Hugh Laurie as Mr. Dick, with the plot based on a modern take on Charles Dickens’s classic tale of a young orphan who is able to triumph over many obstacles.
Should the combination of those three ingredients–excellent source material, exceptional director, and a wonderful cast–do anything less than captivate, it would serve as a striking disappointment. However, “The Personal History of David Copperfield” is by far the highest rated film now playing in theaters with a Rotten Tomato score of 92% Fresh.
