Paramount just dropped the trailer for their new film “Happily,” starring Joel McHale and Kerry Bishé. The film is directed by BenDavid Grabinski and the supporting cast includes Natalie Morales, Natalie Zea, and Stephen Root.
Personally, I’m excited for this movie. I’ve been a fan of Joel McHale since his Jeff Winger days on “Community,” and am happy he wasn’t typecasted as a strictly TV actor. Kerry Bishé stars opposite McHale and hopefully delivers a performance on par with her work in “Argo.”
But despite the loaded cast, “Happily” still worries me, mostly because of the genre it falls into. Movies labeled romantic-comedy, action-thrillers are comparable to middle schoolers who dream of making it to the NBA: few succeed, many fail. It’s too niche in my opinion, and the amalgamation of four different genres often makes for a muddled plot and a confusing tone.
That being said, there are the success stories. “Date Night” with Steve Carell and Tina Fey is fantastic. “Mr and Mrs. Smith” is entertaining (although how of this can we attribute to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie facial perfection?). Even 2020’s “The Lovebirds” starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae had its moments.
But there are too many flops to not be skeptical. “Bounty Hunter,” “This Means War,” “Knight and Day,” Spy Who Dumped Me,” “Fool’s Gold,” “Killers,” “Hit and Run,” and “One For the Money” are all horrible movies (sorry for everyone involved, I’m sure you worked hard).
Only time will tell which category “Happily” falls under. Until then, check out the trailer and make your own predictions. WINGER!
