Why Steven Spielberg’s 1993 ‘Jurassic Park’ Is More Than a Monster Movie

“Jurassic Park” still wows audiences nearly 30 years later.

“Jurassic Park” won’t go extinct anytime soon. All three films from the original “Jurassic Park” trilogy will be added to Netflix on August 1 (tomorrow). In addition, Steven Spielberg’s 1993 “Jurassic Park” has been seeing a resurgence in popularity as an increasing number of theaters use the film to coax audiences back inside their auditoriums.

How has a franchise revolving around dinosaurs achieved this kind of longevity and admiration? It’s because “Jurassic Park” doesn’t revolve around dinosaurs at all. In particular, Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” revolves around fully fleshed out characters who have desires, fears, and strong beliefs. It asks tough questions about humanity and isn’t afraid to leave audiences with complicated answers.  By making the mighty dinosaurs narrative props instead of the narrative’s foundation, screenwriters Michael Crichton and David Koepp ensured that the world of “Jurassic Park” would be one to which audiences desired to visit again and again.

1993’s “Jurassic Park” spawned 5 sequels. The franchise’s sixth entry, “Jurassic World: Dominion,” is expected to release next summer. It will be the final film in the “Jurassic World” trilogy. “Dominion” stars “Jurassic World” alums Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum are also reprising their iconic roles from the original “Jurassic Park” trilogy. “Dominion” will mark the first time the classic trio appears on screen together since 2001’s “Jurassic Park 3.”

The video from Lessons from the Screenplay explores the ways in which Michael Crichton and David Koepp integrated various themes into “Jurassic Park’s” script. Their magnificent writing transformed “Jurassic Park” into more than a mind-numbing monster movie. The 1993 blockbuster has complex characters, smart action sequences, and plenty of themes and motifs to unpack. Check it out above to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of one of Steven Spielberg’s most enduring accomplishments.
