Blast Off In Pixar’s New Film ‘Lightyear’

If you thought Pixar was done with “Toy Story” then you are in for a surprise. Yes, the fourth installment seemed like a great way to bookend the franchise, but when money is to be made, then the House of Mouse will want to make it. Fortunately, the studio has decided to expand on the canon of one of “Toy Story’s” most iconic characters, rather than shovel out another tacked-on “Toy Story” sequel.

Lightyear” is the next Pixar animated adventure coming to theaters. The synopsis reads, “The story of Buzz Lightyear and his adventures to infinity and beyond.” The film will star Chris Evans as the iconic astronaut and will serve as an origin story for the character.

This isn’t the first time that Disney has commissioned a Buzz Lightyear spin-off. Back in the early 2000s, there was a Buzz Lightyear tv show called “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.” The character of Buzz Lightyear has always seemed to have more franchise potential than someone like Woody. Not that I wouldn’t want to watch a Woody tv show or movie, but galactic adventures are a bit more appealing than a kid friendly version of the wild west, let’s be honest.

It’s good to see Pixar continue to support the brand without having to go back and make more “Toy Story” movies. I for one think those toys have suffered enough and would rather see Pixar make another humdrum “Cars” sequel, than watch them try to find another existential crisis for Buzz and co to overcome. My heart just wouldn’t be able to take it. This new “Lightyear” on the other hand, looks like a classic bit of fun, sci-fi adventure that probably won’t make me cry … probably.

“Lightyear” is expected to release in theaters on June 17, 2022.
