Pixar has released a teaser trailer that gives fans a first look at their latest upcoming film, “Turning Red.” The film follows a young girl who turns into a giant red panda whenever she becomes excited. And she appears very excitable …
The teaser primarily consists of one scene that introduces us to the main character, Mei Lee, and her transformation problem. The appearance of her mother in her school courtyard gets her stressed enough to spontaneously puff up into her beastly counterpart. There is also some humor and a bit of action.
It seems Mei Lee’s supernatural problem is allegorical to the typical difficulties kids of her age have when managing volatile emotions. The red panda luckily seems a bit cuter than a typical temper tantrum.
This concept seems awfully similar to Pixar’s most recent release, “Luca.” In the film, two young teens struggle to fit in because they transform into sea monsters whenever they get wet. However, “Luca,” has been generally well received by fans and critics, so perhaps there can’t be too much of a good thing.
A young actress named Rosalie Chiang will be voicing Mei Lee, and Sandra Oh will lend her voice to Mei Lee’s overbearing mother. “Turning Red” will be the feature directorial debut for Domee Shi, whose name you may recognize from Pixar’s Oscar-winning short film “Bao.”

While the trailer may be exciting, fans of Pixar will have to wait almost a year to see the film. “Turning Red” will be released on March 11, 2022.
