You may have heard of Francis Ford Coppola. He’s the visionary director behind “The Godfather,” “The Conversation, and “Apocalypse Now.” But he’s also quite the dancer. In the photo above, Coppola takes center stage and leads the cast of “The Outsiders” in a dance rehearsal.
The set of “The Outsiders” appears to be one fun time. In addition to dance lessons, C. Thomas Howell (Poneyboy) told Variety about all the hijinks that went on during production stating:
I stumbled into my hotel room ready to go to sleep and literally everything in my hotel room, from a penny to my bed, had been turned upside down.
Similarly, Coppola described his desire to make the film stemmed from wanting to create a summer camp atmosphere, telling The New York Times:
I used to be a great camp counselor, and the idea of being with half a dozen kids in the country and making a movie seemed like being a camp counselor again. It would be a breath of fresh air. I’d forget my troubles and have some laughs again.
The half dozen kids on the set of “The Outsiders” all went on to become Hollywood stars. Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise and Diane Lane are some of the more notable cast members from the 1983 film. Additionally, Coppola’s nephew Nicolas Cage has a cameo in the film.
