Earlier this year “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy returned to U.S. IMAX theaters in 4K. Now, the beloved franchise will also return to the big screens in China.
Per Variety, “The Fellowship of the Ring” will kick off the re-release when it hits Chinese theaters this Friday, April 16. While “The Two Towers” is already slated to return to theaters the following Friday, April 23, “Return of the King’s” release date is still undetermined.
“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy will be the latest blockbusters to re-release their films in China during the pandemic. Earlier this year “Avatar” regained the crown of highest grossing film of all time when it returned to theaters. Since its re-release last March, “Avatar” has already grossed $56.6 million. Surely, “The Lord of the Rings” expects similar success.
Additional Hollywood blockbuster to return to Chinese theaters during the pandemic include “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which re-opend last August. The first Harry Potter film brought home a sizable $29.4 million during its run. However, despite the success, no other Harry Potter films received re-releases.
