‘Don’t Look Up’ Costume Prop Gave Jennifer Lawrence A Hilariously Hard Time

In the new disaster comedy “Don’t Look Up,” Jennifer Lawrence plays an astronomer who attempts to warn the world about an asteroid set to destroy the Earth.

To get in character for the role, Lawrence was given an edgy look with flaming red hair and a silver nose ring. The actress consulted with a real-life astronomer to create an intellectual and fierce personality.

Unfortunately, “the look” gave Lawrence some trouble on set. The nose ring in particular led to some embarrassing moments for the actress in front of co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

“The nose rings … one just kind of hangs in; one is a magnet,” she said. “And many, many times I accidentally inhaled said magnet and had to spit it out in front of Leonardo DiCaprio.” Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Larence is no stranger to elaborate costumes. But it’s always the smallest thing that seems to throw a wrench in the plans. Or in this case, her performance.

“Don’t Look Up” features an impressive cast and it’s not easy pulling your act together, being in the same scenes as Meryl Streep. Lawrence also commented on Meryl’s role in the film:

“Yeah, I mean, Meryl Streep was our last choice. Unfortunately, so many other actresses passed, and we ended up with Meryl Streep.” Jennifer Lawrence

Perhaps in an attempt to steer the conversation away from her nose ring inhalation, Lawrence downplays Streep’s role. It seems their characters are going to be at odds in the film.

Streep plays Madame President who blatantly ignores the warnings of the young astronomer, which should make for some good comedy. I can’t help but think how much funnier it would be if she were to blow out her nose ring during a scene, maybe in a fit of rage?

No matter the wardrobe malfunction, I’m sure Lawrence’s co-stars are a bit more preoccupied with delivering stellar performances, as is their standard.

“Don’t Look Up” premieres on Netflix on December 24, 2021.
