“West Side Story’s” Rachel Zegler will go from playing a hopeless romantic in New York City’s Upper West Side to starring as the “fairest of them all” in Disney’s live-action adaptation of the studio’s first animated feature film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
The adaptation will offer a new take on the classic story, which follows a princess who seeks refuge with a pair of dwarfs in the woods to escape persecution from her evil, jealous stepmother.
Marc Webb, who previously directed “(500) Days of Summer” and both “The Amazing Spider-Man” series films, will be at the helm for this iconic fairytale. Joining him are songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, both of whom wrote songs for “Dear Evan Hansen,” “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman.” The team will adapt the film’s classic songs as well as write new ones.
Zegler was cast as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “West Side Story” following a nationwide search — starring alongside Ansel Elgort and Rita Moreno, “West Side Story” will be Zegler’s debut film.
Zegler will also star alongside Zachary Levi in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.”
The untitled Snow White adaptation is expecting to go into production in 2022.
