Back in the 1990s, Universal did something similar to what they attempted only a few years ago. Not that dark universe nonsense. It’s the 1990s after all. We’re a long way off from the MCU. No, they remade every one of their classic monster movie properties with varying levels of success.
We got “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” and “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein” but “The Mummy” film was a different kind of remake. There was no novel to adapt, so they had to get creative. Thank God they did, because if not, we might not have had the classic, action-adventure extravaganza that was “The Mummy.”
“The Mummy” starring Brendan Fraser was the last successful, classic adventure film before the dawn of the dark and gritty era that came with the turn of the millennium. Well, now that Universal has taken the time to assess what went wrong with their 2017 reboot, they came to the same conclusion we all did: we want our boy Brendan back fighting mummies!
Reports are speculating that he is being eyed to return to his iconic role for the next installment in “The Mummy” franchise. Universal seems to have recognized the Brenaissance is upon us and wants to cash in. Look, “The Mummy” sequels were ok at best, but they were undeniably carried by Brendan Fraser, so good or not, I’ll gladly pay to see my man Rick O’Connell fighting the undead again.
