Brendan Fraser Cast as Fiery Villain In ‘Batgirl’

Brendan Fraser
Universal Pictures

So, if you haven’t heard, Brendan Fraser is back. His career is having a bit of a resurgence and with news of him being cast in a new DC film, it’s safe to say the Fraseissance is upon us. I, for one, am so happy to see the man who made the “Mummy” films such fun returning to the spotlight. But, this time he won’t be playing an action hero.

No, Brendan Fraser has been cast as the sinister Batman villain Firefly in the upcoming DC film “Batgirl.” To see this usually jovial, heroic actor take on the role of a villain will be fun to watch. This isn’t the actor’s first foray into live action DC adaptations though. Brendan Fraser took on a more heroic role in the form of Cliff Steele, better known in the comics as Robotman, on the tv show “Doom Patrol.”

It seems the actor has gone from the small screen to the big again. Or, well, I should say big-ish. “Batgirl” will be an HBO Max exclusive film. Still,  this is certainly a jump up in roles. He may be a villain this time around, but if the superhero movie genre has proven anything, it’s that it’ll gladly make a villain look good for money. Maybe Firefly will be the next big thing. More likely, he’ll just be a lunatic with a flamethrower and a jetpack like in the comics.

But you know who’ll be playing that lunatic with a flamethrower and jetpack, Brendan Frickin Fraser. It’ll probably be the only reason to see this loosely canonical adaptation of Batgirl in the DCEU. “Batgirl” is currently in pre-production and is expected to stream on HBO Max sometime next year.
