Allllll-righty then! It’s time to look at a photo from the Jim Carrey comedy classic, “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” Say what you will about Jim Carrey, but he’s got quite the range. Playing a crazy slapstick character in “Ace Ventura” and “Dumb and Dumber,” to a comedic but sympathetic Truman in “The Truman Show,” to a purely dramatic role in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” Carrey has done it all.
But “Ace Ventura” may be his most quotable. It was not an instant success, to be sure. With a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, not everybody was enamored by the pure absurdity. Even the audience only gave it a 57%. A classic, sure, but not everybody’s cup of tea.
Not to mention it hasn’t aged so gracefully. One scene is particularly rife with homophobic and transphobic messages. After kissing a woman who he later learns had transitioned, Ace Ventura aggressively tries to “clean” himself. The negative reviews at the time weren’t pointing this out, but in a modern context, it’s a tough scene to watch.
