You’d be forgiven for forgetting about the Robert Pattinson Batman movie. It’s been a very long year since its last trailer and the film has suffered several delays as it tried to navigate production under the pandemic. Well, DC Fandome is here and we finally have ourselves a release date and a new trailer to boot for Pattinson’s “The Batman.”
Gotham City is still looking nice and grimy, which is just how we like it. The trailer showcased lots of high octane action, giving us our first look at the new Batmobile and Batman in action. The trailer also showed off the film’s neo-noir take on the caped crusader with an emphasis on a game of cat and mouse between Batman and Riddler.
This film’s official synopsis reads, “In his second year of fighting crime, Batman uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as the Riddler.” This isn’t Jim Carrey’s Riddler, but Matt Reeves’. He’s got the colorful ideas of a supervillain with the aesthetic of the Zodiac killer. Meanwhile, Batman is looking like he needs to go to anger management.
One thing that seems to be certain is “The Batman” will be keeping with the more grounded and gritty approach to the superhero. The highs of Nolan’s “Dark Knight” have not been quite reached since, so here’s hoping director Matt Reeves can capture some of that magic.
That said, part of me hopes there’s a little bit more love for some of the exaggerated comic book inspired aspects of Batman this time around. I’m not saying Riddler has to hold Batman over a vat of acid, but take one of those deathtraps from “Seven” and throw Batman into it. Tell me you wouldn’t want to watch that. Maybe not the Lust trap though. I don’t wanna know how Batman would get out of that one.
