Disney Pixar’s ‘Soul’ to Debut Christmas Day on Disney Plus

Soul is the latest movie to get the Disney Plus treatment.

After many movies have pushed back release dates and theaters started closing because of COVID-19, the future of the industry and theatrical releases have remained uncertain. But many movies are using streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus to release their newest films. Some even speculate that this method might be the “new normal” or can change the way we watch movies

Expected features like “Dune” and “Black Widow” have already been pushed further then their expected release date, and The Walt Disney Company is following suit with their announcement that Pixar’s “Soul” will also be released in December. Originally, the film was scheduled to be released in the spring but was pushed to November for theatrical release. Now that the coronavirus impact is still disrupting the industry and forcing Regal Cinemas to shut down nationwide, Pixar has decided to skip the theaters completely.

After Disney’s release of films like “Mulan,” “Hamilton,” and “Artemis Foul” on Disney+, Pixar is also planning to debut their film on the platform. “Soul” will be the latest in the line up that has been moved from its theatrical slate to Disney Plus. But unlike previous Premiere access titles, the release of “Soul” will not require a $30 charge to view the film, instead, it will be available to subscribers without additional charge.

The much anticipated film is directed by Pete Docter, the filmmaker behind “Up” and “Inside Out” and features the voice of Jamie Foxx as an aspiring jazz musician who finds himself in a metaphysical world after his soul has been separated from his body. Watch the trailer for “Soul” below and keep an eye out for its release this December 25th.
