Rian Johnson Celebrates First Day Of ‘Knives Out 2’ Showcasing Film’s Idyllic Greek Setting

Rian Johnson's Knives Out 2 begins filming

Rian Johnson seems to be taking fans of Benoit Blanc’s capers across the globe, as he celebrates the first day of shooting “Knives Out 2” by posting a picture via Twitter, which showcases the film’s idyllic Greek setting.

“Aaaaaaaand WE’RE OFF! Day one of filming on the next Benoit Blanc mystery. Thanks to all the lovely patient people here in Greece for letting us do all this murdering on their peaceful shores,” Johnson wrote as the caption for the Twitter post.

Rian Johnson’s suspenseful mystery/comedy “Knives Out” was a thriller starring Daniel Craig, best described as a “whodunnit like no one has done it before,” and the twisted, wonderfully acted and thoroughly hilarious film turned out to be just that, earning an Oscar nomination and $300 million worldwide. The film’s success green-lit its, now in-development, sequel.

“Knives Out 2” won’t be a continuation of the story of the first film. Rather, Johnson described it as yet another take on the classic whodunit genre, but with an entirely new cast of characters as well as a brand new story.

“In my mind, I don’t even think of it in terms of like a sequel. To me it’s just, ever since we started working on this I was like, ‘Look, if we can keep this going, the same way Agatha Christie wrote a bunch of Poirot novels. I mean, do that with Blanc and keep making more mysteries,’” Johnson said in an interview. “(It’s a) Whole new cast, whole new location, whole new mystery. It’s just another Benoit Blanc mystery and it seems like there’s just so many different things you can do with it, you know? It seems like it’d be really fun.”

Though little is known about the film’s plot, the film’s cast is already one for the books, as it’s packed to the brim with stars. Daniel Craig is returning as Benoit Blanc, and joining him are Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline and Jessica Henwick.

Netflix bought the rights to two “Knives Out” sequels for about $450 million, so the film will be available to stream via Netflix sometime in 2022.
