HBO Max released the official trailer for “The Matrix Resurrections” in early September. However, Warner Bros. largely withheld any significant details on what the striking visuals all meant.
Now, the studio has provided the official synopsis for “The Matrix Resurrections,” and fans are in for a treat.
Posted on the Warner Bros. awards website, the synopsis for the movie reads, “In a world of two realities—everyday life and what lies behind it—Thomas Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. Choice, while an illusion, is still the only way in or out of the Matrix, which is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before.”
While it seemed like very few fans were asking for a fourth installment of the franchise, “The Matrix Resurrections” may actually successfully breathe new life into the series. The previous two entries were largely bogged down in the dark and desolate “real world.” This entry seems to take place mostly–or perhaps even entirely–inside the Matrix, with its bright colors and unrestricted boundaries.
When asked what inspired her to create “The Matrix Resurrections,” Lana Wachowski explained, “My dad died, then this friend died, then my mom died. I didn’t really know how to process that kind of grief. I hadn’t experienced it that closely… You know their lives are going to end and yet it was still really hard,” she said. “I couldn’t have my mom or dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life. It was immediately comforting… You can look at it and say: ‘Okay, these two people died and okay, bring these two people back to life and oh, doesn’t that feel good,’” said the director.
“The Matrix Resurrections” releases in theatres and HBO Max on Dec. 22.
